Rules of Style by Nick Wooster

esq-4-nick-wooster-interview-121812-xlg

The Southernmost Gentleman is no stranger to detailing influential men of style and sartorial innovation– One of those men being the prodigious man of paramount importance and style; icon and fashion maverick Nick Wooster.

Details.com introduces a “Rules of Style” list that Wooster delineates on, in which includes his secret to tie efforts, playing with color when one is a beginner to men’s style, explaining the “sartorial mullet,” and basically everything else in-between.

We conclude to you his top five rules on his list:

1. If you can’t afford a Rolex buy something equally as interesting at the other end of the spectrum like a Luminox—those are really cool. Don’t buy a watch trying to emulate a Rolex.

2. I subscribe to the notion of the sartorial mullet—stay tailored up top and less buttoned up on the bottom. I love funny pants.

3. If you’re going to play with color start with one. If you’re wearing yellow, everything else should be navy and grey. Yes, I’ve been known to wear bright green and pink at the same time but I don’t do that often—the bulk of my closet is grey, navy, white, khaki, olive, and a little black.

4. If you’re putting in the effort to wear a tie, finish it off with a smart and simple tie bar. Not a decorative, big, or funny one. Just something functional.

5. A quarter-and-an-inch chocolate brown belt with a sterling buckle goes with everything from jeans to chinos to a proper suit. It may cost you $1,000, but it’s a good investment.

J. Crew x London

Retailer J. Crew Prepares For IPO

J. Crew, one of America’s most imfamous retail destinations, situated in New York, is assembling its most monumental move of the year and opening not just one, but three new stores in the heart of the UK. Set to launch on November 1st, J. Crew will open its doors to the public at its flagship store on Regent Street.

The notable fashion brand will also be opening two other stores a few weeks beforehand for those who just cannot detain their excitement. Lamb’s Conduit Street situated in Bloomsbury, London, will see a sole focus on menswear, providing specialist services in monogramming, customized stitching and buttons, and as an added touch, a complimentary delivery service.

Chairman and CEO Mickey Drexler commented to say “I love that every neighborhood throughout London has its own unique personality – it’s a lot like New York City in that way. After a lot of looking around and visiting various areas, we came across these two very different locations and knew – both were too good to pass up.”

Careful consideration will certainly pay off, as we’re certain this quality retailer will go down as a tempest with the British consumers.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt OUT Feature

out

America’s most-beloved heartthrob, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is featured on the cover of the October 2013 issue of OUT Magazine. In the issue, the 32-year old actor articulates his role in the upcoming film “Don Jon,” and the ever-perpetual rumors and inquisitive notion about his sexuality.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt articulates:

On the film: “I wasn’t interested in making a movie about pornography,” Gordon-Levitt says. “I was interested in making a movie about how people treat each other like things, and all kinds of media can contribute to that.” In that sense, Don Jon can be viewed as an allegory for the way Gordon-Levitt has sometimes felt defined by his own celebrity. “I’ve been working as an actor since I was a little kid, and I’ve always been fascinated, and a little horrified, by the way people relate to images they see on screen,” he says. “Sometimes I feel I am seen as a thing more than a person, and I don’t think that’s unique to actors. I think everyone is subject to that kind of pigeonholing.”

Levitt on gay innuendos: Contrary to many celebrity-paparazzi encounters, no punches are thrown, no voices raised. Gordon-Levitt does not even bother refuting the gay innuendo (“That would be really tacky—they would win if I had to clarify,” he says).

“Don Jon” is scheduled to be released Sept. 27. In the meantime, please enjoy more from the interview at OUT.

New York Fashion Week: Billy Reid S/S ’14

bill

When you begin to ponder what The Southernmost Gentleman evokes as a brand, there is no better visual than Billy Reid. The southern native showcased his Spring 2014 collection full of patterns, fabrics and cuts that delivered southern sophistication with Southern Californian significance.

There is something about this Billy Reid collection that evokes a love/hate nature. The fabrics and tailoring is so evocative of an older generation that it emotes memories, and you fall in love with the clothing. On the other hand, it’s so outside from what we’ve been seeing on the New York Fashion Week runways it makes you question what Billy Reid was thinking.

That, my folks, is fashion.

Reid has found a way to collaborate what we know about clothing and make us perceive it in a different way, and honestly, this writer would take any suit, pant or short that Reid displayed any day.

This ready-to-wear line contains a much different silhouette than last year’s spring collection. Where last year, Reid had more fitted, tailored lines, this year he has showcased a much boxier, baggier shape. Fortunately, the tailoring still remains in the pants and shorts, which is why we are so in love with them.

The collection was accompanied with live music by Louisiana-born jazz and blues musician, Jon Batiste, which successfully added to the aesthetic of the collection. Reid is following the perfect balance of bagginess and closeness. If you’re planning on adhering to a baggy stature on top, be fitted on the bottom. Some pieces take that to the extreme in Reid’s collection, but he very much shows his grasp of this notion in several of his pieces.

Our favorite pieces would have to be the full patterned off-white suit styled with the striped tee and suede slip-on; also, Reid’s interpretation of camouflage fabricated out of a floral pattern. It’s fresh and ready for everything spring has to offer.

Please enjoy images from the collection, detailed below.

The Esquire Network

g4-to-be-rebranded-as-the-esquire-network-on-april-22nd

In February of this year, the Esquire Network was announced to rebrand the G4 network. However, this is not the case. The Esquire Network has officially announced, today, that it will rebrand the female empowered, Style Network. Over the years, the Style Network has overlapped with offerings on E! (71 percent overlap), Bravo (69 percent overlap) and younger-skewing Oxygen (58 percent overlap). By removing the Style Network, the remaining prevalent three women networks will be allowed to better serve their distinctive audiences without the additional level of confusion amongst the brands. By doing this, the Esquire Network will have the availability to launch on a more monumental platform. Style is better suitable within 75 million homes compared to G4’s 62 million.

Style president, Salaam Coleman Smith will remain with the network through the rebranding transition. NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group chairman, Bonnie Hammer, articulated to her staff the following memo, “One of the hallmarks of our success is brand clarity. Our goal has always been delivery of compelling content by means of distinct, complementary brands, each in its clearly defined lane. With Bravo, E! and Oxygen, we offer unique takes on popular culture for an ever-broadening audience, including the all-important female demo. In pursuit of that same demo, Style presents brand overlap within our portfolio. Esquire Network, on the other hand, offers an opportunity to introduce a lifestyle network that speaks to an upscale male audience underserved in the current marketplace.”

Look for the Esquire Network to broadcast on your television on the date of September 23rd.

New York Fashion Week: ‘Shades of Grey’ by Micah Cohen S/S ’14

logo

When we hear the phrase ‘shades of grey,’ we instinctively think, muted and boring, winters. However, in this case, designer Micah Cohen has taken the risk and chosen to go for quite the opposite season to show his impeccable spring/summer 2014 collection.

With a immaculate selection, we are seeing a very wide range of casual, sportswear combined with the ultra smart, and sophisticated toned suit/jacket combination. Keeping it casual, Cohen has gone for simple t-shirts underneath suit jackets and cuffed suit bottoms. A very interesting take which I’m certain is going to be a huge hit. Throughout his collection is the classic bomber jacket in, of course, a variety of shades. Seeing elements of suede patching on both the jackets and slouchy joggers adds a great modern twist.

It also seems the current trend of suits with shorts silhouette is prevalent into next year as well. Our personal favorites, Cohen’s creation of the smart navy suit and the all in one patterned shirt and shorts.

Please enjoy images of the collection, detailed below.
